With three rows of seating, top performance, and incredible utility, the Honda Pilot is a great alternative for Santa Ana families who don’t want to drive a minivan around California. This SUV is one of the few in its class to combine utility with passenger comfort, offering an excellent ride and roomy, flexible seats.
2016 Honda Pilot: Engine, Performance, and Efficiency
The Honda Pilot runs on a 3.5-liter V6 engine that balances power with efficiency. It generates 280 horsepower and a torque of 262 pound-feet. The lower trims have a 6-speed automatic while the top two trims, the Touring and Elite, have a 9-speed automatic featuring automatic stop/start and shift paddles on the steering wheel.
Upgrade from the standard front-wheel drive to all-wheel drive to get power to the back and front plus right and left wheels as a way to boost handling. On all but the base LX, the all-wheel drive models also come with settings for Mud, Sand, and Snow to boost traction. Front-wheel drive Pilots get 22 mpg* combined with the 6-speed automatic and 23 combined with the 9-speed. Efficiency only drops by 1 mpg when you switch to all-wheel drive. The Pilot can tow 3,500 or 5,000 pounds with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, respectively.
2016 Pilot: Comfort and Convenience
Most Pilot trims seat eight passengers, except the top Elite trim, which will seat seven because of the 2nd-row captain’s chairs. The base Pilot has active noise cancelation, cruise control, and privacy glass for convenience. Comfort comes from air-conditioning, the tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and the 60/40 seat in the 3rd row. Upgrading can add heated mirrors, fog lights, keyless entry and ignition, 3-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power adjustment and 2-way power lumbar for the driver, 4-way power for the front passenger, leather upholstery, leather on the steering wheel, a power liftgate, heated front seats, roof rails, advanced safety features, and more.
